shavin'

anybody that knows (or has seen) me, knows that i don't shave often.  i hate it.  it mangles my skin.  sure, i like to be buttery smooth, but i just can't take the burn.

i knew there had to be a better way, and now i know it.  wet shaving.  going old school.  did a little exploring and found the solution to my problems.

first, the razor.  get a safety razor (named such as the successor of the straight razor).  ok, so i haven't gotten one of these yet, but i will.  spend the extra money up front for a body that you can pass on to your kids and save money on the blades (they run about $.50 apiece, a bargain compared to those Mach 3 things).  the key here is to invest in good blades and to replace them about once a week (once a year, for RC2K).

next, get the right creams.  i went to kiehl's and got myself some samples.  first, the pre-shave oil.  good stuff for those with seriously sensitive skin.  a little goes a long ways.  next, you need the cream.  avoid that foamy stuff in the canisters and get either the brush on shave soap (need the brush too) or something from a tube.  again, a little goes a long ways.  after using the kiehl's cream, i can't even believe what i was doing to my face.  very emolient.  can't really say which is better, tube or brush.  either will kick the crap out whatever you're using now.

finish the whole thing up with a good after shave cream.  don't bother with those liquids that burn your face.  what you need is a good thick moisturizer.  again, i used the kiehl's samples and i was amazed at how soothing it was.  and it absorbed quickly, despite being a thick cream.

check out the l'occitane stuff for a good place to start.  they everything you need (except the razor).  don't let the expense get you down: this stuff goes a ways.  and besides, do you really want to go to an important meeting with red bumps all over your face?

I'm not sure if by "Wet Shaving" you mean in the shower, but that's key for me. Hot shower with 5 mins to soften up the wiskers really helps. If I haven't shaved in a long weekend - I go with a little hair conditioner. I'm also not sure on the straight razor - the more blades the better.

i dunno, i think it's about quantity not quality. but a safety razor is not a straight razor.

showering first certainly does help though.
